Career Changers

Changing careers doesn’t have to be a daunting proposition. With the support of a quality organization, it can be an easy transition.

Many attorneys, musicians, athletes, bankers, accountants, educators, and military personnel  have transitioned into successful careers as financial representatives with Northwestern Mutual.

A career as a financial representative can give you the independence you are looking for, while having the extensive resources of Northwestern Mutual available to you. Please take a moment to read about our Career Changers, the real-life stories of people just like you who made this exciting and rewarding change in their careers and lives.

Troy Nunn was a financial advisor with SunTrust’s private banking office, in their wealth management group on Music Row, when he began to consider moving to Northwestern Mutual. “Chad Greer was my financial representative,” he says. “ When I met with Chad to talk about insurance planning, I realized he did everything I did, plus insurance. But, as a broker, I worked with people with substantial assets who were 40 to 60. I didn’t get to work with younger couples or professionals, and I saw an opportunity to work with my natural market. People my age need insurance and planning.”

Troy was impressed by the quality of Northwestern’s people, products, business operation and management development – and with the opportunity to “help people build wealth.” He targets salespeople, professionals and small business owners in their 20s to mid-30s. “These clients need to protect their families and start saving to build wealth,” he says. “A great client is someone with a good income who wants to save money.”

Initially, Troy admits, “I took a financial step backwards.” However, he emphasizes, “It was a temporary sacrifice that was well worth the transition. I’ve really enjoyed the type of work I’ve been able to do for the last two years.”

Troy’s advice to new financial representatives:  “You’re in business for yourself; not by yourself. To be successful, you have to want to help people grow and protect their wealth. And to reach your potential, you give 100%.”

Tracy Hackney did not start out with a burning ambition to be an NMFN rep. His father is a successful Northwestern rep in Chattanooga, and “In high school, I did spreadsheet presentations for his estate planning sessions,” he remembers. But in college, “I wanted to be Bob Dylan,” and formed a band that did “covers” of other musicians’ hits. After college, he produced a record on his own, raced mountain bicycles and held a series of “day jobs” before joining another band, Bare, Jr. “We toured 300 days a year, opened for Aerosmith, and played on Conan O’Brien,” he remembers. “But I realized my lifestyle would go downhill as my success went uphill.”

Tracy was not a big fan of life on the road, and as he and Leslie began talking about starting a family, he “let the band know I would leave within a year.” “Dad always made me promise I’d consider NM,   So I did. I had never interviewed for a job in my life, and I think I wore a button-down shirt and a pair of khakis. But I have a lot of discipline, and I knew I could do it.”

Managing Director David Knox became his mentor, and, “I bought into everything he told me: Do the numbers and become a trusted advisor.” Tracy also completed his licenses in two months. “I didn’t have a clue how big my natural market was until my wife and I made a list.”

Tracy’s advice to new financial representatives: “Do the numbers. My dad told me to ‘show up every day.’ This career is amazingly hard, but the potential is unbelievable.”
